The Walhonding Canal was built between 1836 and 1842. The State of Ohio officially abandoned the canal in 1896, but the Walhonding Valley Railroad (Pennsylvania Railroad - TC&OR Walhonding Branch) was built partly using the towpath in early 1890s. The Ohio Canal Society will be touring the Walhonding Canal and the section of the Ohio & Erie Canal east to Newcomerstown on April 20-22, 2018.
