Pennsylvania Canal
Land Maps

The Pennsylvania Railroad purchased the Pennsylvania Main Line Canal in 1857. The canal was abandoned in segments between 1857 and 1899. Surveys were made and land maps were created for the property in the early 1880s. Some portions of the canal were still in operation at the time and the maps show the canal basin, towpath, locks and adjacent structures, roads and railroads. (Most atlas pages still need to be scanned)

In 1918 the Pennsylvania Raiload created railroad valuaion maps for the Interstate Commerce Commission which also include the canal property. The maps are organized by Valuation Section for railroad lines within PRR Divisions. The Canal property from Duncannon to Pittsburgh rougly follows these PRR lines: Middle Division Main Line VS#7.1, Middle Divison Petersburg Branch VS#8.01, Pittsburgh Division New Portage Branch VS#18.01, Pittsburgh Division Main Line VS#17.1, PRR Conemaugh Divison Main Line VS#22.0, VS#21.1, VS#21.2 (Most maps have been scanned and are available from the Pennsylvania Railroad Technical and Historical Society - view online database)

Using these two sources the canal route and property can be traced in great detail.
